At Landmark Makers, we make sure to include the question "what subjects are you passionate about and how do you like to stay up to date on them?"
Usually when the "slump" hits, 3-6 months after the hire, we look back at that question and send them a book, additional training, or something related to that fuel.
We also give them creative flexibility to pursue a work related passion on Friday afternoons.
